A LITTLE ON THE WILD SIDE!
I'd like to take you on a journey! So please, follow me as I entice you into the mist-shrouded Indian jungle on a cold frosty morning. The jeep's exhaust still belching white fumes into the crisp morning air, the ground crackling as the tyres leave their tracks down the winding dirt road, the first rays of sunlight just starting to filter through the tall Sal trees. It's freezing, you're totally wrapped with blankets, gloves, beanies, and scarves - the works! You're after the elusive, but real, tiger that prowls the wild during the night marking its territory and looking for something to fill its belly. Imagine the excitement that has built up, your awareness is heightened by the cold and the prospect of seeing a creature so magnificent and so majestic in the wild.
This is part of an exciting travel experience that I would like to take you on in October this year. Many Australians fear traveling to India because they worry about food poisoning, beggars, poverty, and the like. These can all be overcome with the selection of a fascinating tour, staying in quality hotels, eating in reliable restaurants, guided by knowledgeable experts and visiting some of the most amazing tourist sites in the world.
But first the cry of the city and the 'rickshaw wallas' as they peddle through the maze of narrow streets in Chandi Chowk, Delhi's ancient bazaar. It's a hive of activity, with aromas to taunt and arouse the senses, sounds of mayhem as thousands of humans scurry to do whatever they need to. There are bursts of colour in the sari shops, bright and sparkly bangles by the thousand; and spices spill from their neat piles to lure the housewife, as do other equally enticing items to buy. Princess Jahanara Begum built this lively bazaar in 1650 to compliment the Red Fort where her father, Shah Jahan of Taj Mahal fame, was residing as ruler.
You will learn as you are guided on our tour, about the Moghuls, the mighty men who came from the north and ruled in India from the 12th to the 19th centuries. You will see Old Delhi sites like 'Qutab Minar', a 73m high tower of victory built by the Afghans, and Humayun's Tomb built by his widow in 1565 AD and now set in stunning gardens. Then there is New Delhi the imperial city influenced by the British; India Gate to commemorate the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I and II; and the beautiful parliament buildings built during the British Raj. It will be an amazing day of absorbing the richness and history of a city with a population much larger than our whole country.
A small and gracious hotel, with a great bookshop and the most amazing afternoon high teas on the lawn, is what awaits you after a full day soaking up what Delhi has to offer. The charming 'Claridges' has, after a pink gin and tonic in the comfy purple bar, superb quality restaurants in the "Dhaba" and "Sevilla". At the end of the day the huge beds will be enticing and comfortable with a pillow of your choice for the night - to dream about the following day's events.
You will fly to Jabalpur and then wander along a scenic road through villages and forested areas to Kanha National Park. The Earth Lodge will be your home for two days and nights whilst you spend your time tracking tigers in the wild. This place is rustic, built into the forest, with huge bedrooms overlooking the bush and showers with enormous windows enticing the wild to become part of the deal. A blue refreshing pool to laze around whilst waiting for the next game drive will be there for your pleasure.
Your next lodge will be about 4½ hours drive away, through farms and small neat villages. Buffalo will be tethered to banyan trees and village wells will bustle with washing activities. Tiger sightings are fairly common in Bandhavgarh which is located in the Vindhya hills. You will stay at Kings Lodge, in comfortable stilt cottages, where the thrilling sighting of a wild tiger took place {under my room} when I was last there. How can this not be an adventure and enough to get your heart racing? You must be alert and listen for the call of the wild! Your wilderness surroundings will be 'softened' with unforgettable lodgings, with your next two nights, in the same park, in the famous Tree House Hideaway. Each thatched cottage is named after the tree in which it is perched. This is a wonderfully personal stay as huge windows open up to reveal a large patio from which you will sit and absorb the wilderness around you. Time could be spent lazily around the bar which is situated in a 100 year-old Mahua tree, the comfortable lounge seats enticing you to stay just a little longer!
Ken River Lodge will be the last of your PUGDUNDEE SAFARI stays. Its main lodge is perched high in two huge trees and it looks out over the Ken River. Imagine the sunsets as you sit on the verandah with a G & T in one hand and binoculars in the other! The birding here is famous and a morning river ride to some of the islands will astonish you with the differing species. You will go out in the jeeps to the game park but this time you will be more interested in finding the elusive leopard than a tiger! Whilst staying in these lodges be mindful that you are helping the conservational objective set up by Pugdundee's owner "Vini" Singh which is to create a corridor between the parks that you have visited ensuring the survival of a healthy gene pool and safe dispersal of animals through these passages. Pugdundee are buying up tracts of land from locals to ensure this happens. FEEL A SENSE OF PLACE- AN EXPERIENCE OF THE HEART!
Your trip leaves the wild for the erotic, to visit the famous 'Kama Sutra' temples of Khajuraho, a World Heritage site. These, with the Bateshwa temples situated on the Yamuna River are spiritual, sensual and stunningly beautiful. Your last few days are spent visiting Agra and the 'love poem made of marble' the Taj Mahal, so described because the great moghul Shah Jahan spent 22 years to build it in memory of his wife. What a wonderful way for you and me to finish a most exciting adventure through this mysterious and wondrous land of India.
